Anatomy of a Pig-Butchering Scam

How a months-long grooming operation is engineered — and where it can still be interrupted.

Pig-butchering (Chinese: sha zhu pan) is the industrial evolution of the romance scam. What distinguishes it from earlier variants is duration and infrastructure: an operator invests months in a target, then guides them to a fraudulent trading platform engineered to resemble a legitimate brokerage.

The typical funnel begins on a dating application or an unsolicited text. The operator establishes rapport, avoids requests for money, and eventually introduces a 'family investment strategy' — usually a fabricated cryptocurrency trading interface that displays synthetic gains to induce further deposits.

Intervention is most effective before the third deposit. Once liquidity has moved through a mixer or cross-chain bridge, the probability of full recovery declines steeply. Our practice files exchange freeze requests within 24 hours of engagement and, where possible, coordinates with the destination platform's compliance team directly.

If you suspect exposure: stop all further transfers, preserve every message and transaction hash, and initiate confidential intake. Time, not sophistication, is the decisive variable.
