Recognizing Romance Scam Patterns

Twelve operational signatures observed across our closed cases.

Romance scams follow patterns that are far more consistent than victims realise. What feels unique to the target is, from the operator's perspective, a script executed hundreds of times.

Common signatures include: reluctance to appear on video, geographic distance that conveniently prevents in-person meeting, an early emotional intensity disproportionate to the length of acquaintance, and a shift from the introduction platform to encrypted messaging within days.

Financial signatures follow: a medical emergency, a customs fee, a business opportunity requiring bridging capital, or introduction to an 'investment platform' recommended by the persona.

Recognition does not undo the loss. But recognition, documented properly, becomes evidence. Every message preserved is a data point that supports identification of the operator network.
